“The whole idea behind the story is more, ‘how do you undo selling your soul to the devil?’ In essence, that is the question that we are answering in this story,” Papy continued.

“Where does Kratos pick up roughly six months to a year after he killed his wife and kid? What’s his mental state? It’s not a very pleasant one.”

Dalton said Darksiders II’s scope is “huge”; early reports indicate the world size is about four times that of the first Darksiders, something our own hands-on previews have backed up. The enormous scale may be one of the reasons why THQ has delayed the game well beyond its original launch plans, and Dalton doesn’t seem averse to the idea of scaling it back.

“Reducing the size of the world might be seen as a big impact from a player point of view, you know what, we might do a lot more interaction within the world if the world was smaller,” he said.

And there might be even more polish, there might be a lot more animated things in the environment and a lot more detail or destruction or whatever it might be in the world because of a reduce in size. Rather than doing sheer square-footage, it’s more like what can you do in less room by focusing on it, and depth [and] interaction within a smaller environment.

“Initially it seems like if you make it smaller that’s not as good. Well, that’s not necessarily true. Quantity is not about quality. Just because you make something bigger doesn’t mean it’s better.”

Darksiders II arrives on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 at the end of August, and is also expected on Wii U.

“If you look at him, he’s always been told what to do, been more on other people’s missions [than his own]. So making this his game and about his decisions – enabling him to create the briefings on his own instead of having someone tell him what to do all the time – was the starting point, because then it would feel like the player was a bigger part of creating the story.

“And this emotional side is very closely attached to that. For him to have a reason to do something, there needs to be some sort of emotion behind it.”

He’s just doing the things he needs to do to survive and rescue his friends,” said Thompson. “It’s not about right and wrong or good and bad. That’s why the Far Cry games don’t have morality systems, there isn’t this rigid dichotomy of good and bad in the world, so why reflect that in the game?

“We don’t say whether something is good or bad. We don’t judge players. Ultimately the game is about killing, and we know that, so we don’t want to condescend. The game asks you to shoot. The game is about killing people to win. So we wanted to make sure we wrote a story that understood that. The story is about killing, the story is about Jason … Jason comes to the island and he’s never fired a gun before, he’s never killed before. So the story really explores what it means to become, the things he has to do to become a hero.
“The game is about what is the cost of becoming a hero. What is the personal toll that is exacted upon someone who becomes a hero.”

Thompson said he has a respect for those ask why the character kills so many in a game, as it’s a sign that “the audience is maturing,” and “as developers, we have to respect the people who consume the content.”

“We have to respect that the palates of people are becoming a little bit more sophisticated,” he said. “For sure we’ll still have the summer blockbusters, but there is a space for a more nuanced narrative, something that isn’t afraid to tackle issues that video games haven’t been tackling because they’ve been focusing on power fantasies and fantasies about being the ultimate soldier.

“We never see the scenes six months after the event when John McClane [in Die Hard] wakes up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat seeing Hans Gruber falling from Nakatomi. [PTSD] is an important part of what Jason goes through on the island.

“We want to address all of the issues that would happen to a normal person who is put through this kind of situation.”

Far Cry 3 hits PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 in November.
