In a game industry full of sequels and spin-offs, sometimes it's nice to see a brand-new franchise that takes things in a new direction. Gearbox's Borderlands delivered by not only giving the loot grinding, stat adjustments and build customization of a great RPG, but also gave it fast, ruthless FPS action that required you to have reflexes and skill to match your RPG mindset. Changing the game's look from a generic "serious" actioner: to a slick, comic-book-styled take-no-prisoners comedy was probably the best part of an already solid game.
In an interview with gaming business site Gamasutra, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford talked about how originality can be a dangerous thing, and how the game industry is full of unchecked plagiarism. "I'm actually astonished that we're about to launch a sequel and no one's stole it from us. The formula's right there. No one's stolen it yet. That's weird.
"We're in an industry where people do nothing but steal from each other. That's kind of interesting, isn't it? Not that I want anyone to steal it, or I'm challenging people to steal it.
"When talking about Borderlands 1, it was really confusing, because on one hand we gotta scream from the highest mountain to get attention because it's a new IP. On the other hand, it's like, '****, we don't want to tell people our secret because then they're all gonna copy it because it's so good.'"
He's on to something, honestly, because ever since Gears of War "borrowed" the cover-based gameplay of Namco's kill.Switch and combined it with Resident Evil 4's right-justified camera, there have been countless followers, from Uncharted to Dead Space to, well... pretty much every game that does third-person shooting nowadays. And that's just one mechanic! What do you think? Are most of the great ideas taken and game developers are just "liberally borrowing" from each other? Or is Pitchford just not looking in the right places?
Far Cry 3 will forefront the tense dissonance between typical gaming narratives – goodies versus baddies – and the reprehensible behaviour required by gameplay. Speaking to CVG, producer Dan Hay denied main character Jason will turn out to be antagonist Vaas all along – alá Fight Club – but said the player will come to see the parallels.
“When you start to look at Vaas and other characters, and you start to see similarities between them and what you’re doing, that’s when the inner conflict starts,” he said.
The conflict starts when the island has exacted its pound of flesh from you. You see it when you start getting those tattoos, which tell a bunch of stories about what you’ve seen and how you’ve played the game. And you look at them and start to see more similarities between the person or people that you hate, than the person you were at the beginning.” Far Cry 3 hits PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in November.

The ESRB rated Haunting Ground, the 2005 PS2 survival-horror title from Capcom, as a PSN download for PS3. For those unfamiliar with the title, in it, layers must help Fiona and her dog Hewie escape a castle and the enemies which inhabit it. Fiona, must be guided through Belli Castle, its grounds and outbuildings until she can find a way to escape. Along the way, players must solve puzzles, unlock doors and evade, hide or attempt to fight back against the castle's inhabitants. Fiona is accompanied by Hewie, a white German Shepherd dog. The two must work as a team to solve certain puzzles and outwit their pursuers.
Square Enix president Yoichi Wada has dispelled rumours of Final Fantasy Versus XIII’s demise. The executive took to Twitter to describe the rumours as a hoax.
Wada said he attended a regular meeting on the RPG’s progress today, and that fans would be surprised to see how the game is shaping up; he specifically mentioned the city setting.
Final Fantasy Versus XIII was announced over six years ago as part of the Fabula Nova Crystallis sequence; an expected reveal earlier this year was unaccountably delayed. We may hear more on September 1.
Those who have held on to their Just Cause 2 save file and plan on purchasing Sleeping Dogs will be able to download a Just Cause 2-themed clothing set for use United Front’s Hong Kong actioner. It doesn’t matter whether you played it on PC, PS3, or Xbox 360. As long as you have a save file, you’ll get the duds along with a boost to your hijack abilities which, according to Eurogamer, will “allow you to perform stunt-style takeovers of enemy vehicles from an even greater distance.” Awesome. 2K’s has released a high resolution screenshot of the Elite Soldier Pack folks will get when they pre-order XCOM: Enemy Unknown. The pack contains the Hyperion and Reaper soldier armor, a full color customization feature for sets in the game, and a character from the original XCOM. Have a look at the kits below. The game’s out on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 October 9 in the US and October 12 internationally.
Ubisoft has announced its line-up for gamescom, and has also released a time for press conference which takes place during the event. Ubisoft’s press conference will take place at 3.00pm on August 15 in the Konrad-Adenauer-Saal, Congress-Centrum North. Therein, executives will unveil new free-to-play titles set in the universes of some of Ubisoft’s franchises and detail the company’s plans in e-sports and other growing online game genres.

THQ has released the first all-gameplay trailer for Darksiders II, showing the Crowfather setting the stage where “the fate of mankind may be determined by the actions of the most feared horseman of the apocalypse.” That would be Death, obviously. Sony has announced the Gran Turismo 5: Academy Edition, which will be released to celebrate the fourth anniversary of its collaboration with Nissan. The disc comes with the original game and DLC along with a new car.

Isaac Clarke, whose Class 1 Snow Suit makes him wider than the doorway outside of which he stands, struggles to squeeze through it sideways. Clarke chips the paintwork, gets wedged in and takes a chunk out of the doorframe in the process of entering the room. He looks at the doctor and grimaces apologetically.
DA: Never mind that, Mr Clarke. Please, sit down. Clarke perches on a chair, his hulking, RIG-clad frame causes it to creak and groan in protest.
DA: Now, as you know, we’re here to discuss your recent, brief foray to Tau Volantis. The higher-ups have asked that I speak to you about how you got on and whether you’re comfortable with going back there on a longer term basis. So, how do you feel it went? Isaac Clarke: … DA: Mr Clarke? This will be a lot easier if you co-operate IC: … DA: Mr Clar… Ah yes, of course, the selective mutism. That’s still plaguing you, it seems? IC: Well, yes, doc; that is to say that someti… DA: I’m sorry, Mr Clarke, could you speak up, please? Clarke frowns, clears his throat and, with visible effort, starts again. IC: Yes, doc. The mutism, it… well it comes and goes.
IC: Yes, doc. The mutism, it… well it comes and goes. Sometimes it will strike at the damndest of moments. DA: I see. But it’s much improved since I first saw you back in 2008, yes? It was very serious back then, rendering you entirely speechless for no discernible reason, as I recall. Clarke nods; then, seeming to think better of it, opens his mouth to reaffirm the progress he’s made. IC: Yes, it’s much better than it was but it still affects me. Recently I was asked whether I’d mind the idea of having a partner accompany me on future missions and I just couldn’t find my voice. Knowing that I’ve always done my best work alone I shook my head, I shook my head pretty emphatically, doc, but it seemed like the people asking me the question weren’t really asking for my opinion; like they’d already made up their mind. DA: I see. I understand that in your most recent training session you spent some
Clarke shifts in his seat, and hears the faint crackle of wood as it begins to splinter, he looks down at his hands, embarrassed. DA: Mr Clarke? IC: It was weird, doc. DA: Define, “weird” for me, Mr Clarke. IC: Well, initially, the company dropped me into a ship and it felt like I’d been there before, but they assured me that it was in fact “brand new” and represented an “exciting, dynamic experience”. I dunno, doc, stomping around the corridors of that old, decommissioned ship on my own, it felt a lot like when I went back to the Ishimura, after it had been taken out of service. DA: I see, and how did that make you feel? IC: Well, I felt comfortable, it felt good to be back, to be honest. DA: You weren’t “back”, Mr Clarke, this represents a new experience, remember?
IC: Well, yeah sure, but it felt reassuring; everything worked as I remembered. Except the doors, they’ve done something odd to them so that I have to open a lot of them using kinesis, instead of just pressing the open button. DA: I see. Anything else? IC: Yeah, they put the frighteners on me a coupla times; which made me smile. The Company told me that they’ve toned it down, something about previous participants not enjoying the necromorphs bursting through walls and whatnot, but they still managed to make me jump. The new toys are pretty cool, too. DA: Just a minute, Mr Clarke, are you saying that you enjoyed that feeling of being scared? I’d like to explore that a little more, rather than just brushing it aside.
The doctor consults his notes. DA: This would be Mr Redfield, that you’re referring to now, yes? IC: Yep, Chris Redfield. After I’d been unable to make my voice heard when they suggested buddying me up, I gave Chris a call to find out how he’d dealt with it. We had a good chat and it helped me to put things into perspective, he had it much worse than me, for sure; that Sheva woman followed him around the whole damn time, Chris said it drove him nuts. DA: Well, at least we don’t have to worry about that with you, Mr Clarke Clarke eyes the doctor, unsure of whether he’s making a joke at his expense. DA: Tell me about the “new toys”, that you mentioned, Mr Clarke. IC: Right, sure, well it seems the company has left a load of spare materials around – in some pretty odd places, frankly – and I can collect them up to create new kit and some new toys.
Todd Papy, director on God of War: Ascension, has said Kratos will be more “likable” and “somewhat” relatable in the game, compared to previous outings. Speaking with Game Informer, Papy said that while our Spartan hero will still be “somewhat ruthless,” there will be a “side to him that you could somewhat relate to.”
“And that was something I wanted to get across,” said Papy, adding that Kratos was a bit of an “*******” in God of War 3.
