Since the reveal of Dead or Alive 5 the folks at Team Ninja have been peddling a peculiar term: Fighting game entertainment. From what they’ve said so far, this basically means “entertainment provided by elements other than the fighting” such as elaborate stages and intense slow-mo features. Yosuke Hayashi has elaborated a bit more on the term.
He points out that the fighters now get tired, dirty and sweaty throughout the course of a battle and that this little flourish adds to the entertainment value of the game.
He also mentions that although the DOA series has always utilized interactive stages, this component will be taken much further and further emphasized in the new game.

Finally, he details the new power blow (slow motion) feature, saying that it allows you to strategically choose where to send you opponent flying. Ayane uses it to send Hitomi flying into a car in the new trailer.
So far I think I like where this FG entertainment thing is going. Hopefully we’ll see more of it as we approach the game’s September release window.

If you’re a fan of Naruto, both old and new, then have I got a treat for you.  Namco Bandai published the launch trailer for Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja STORM Generations that was released today for the Xbox 360 and PS3. The trailer features some of the playable characters in the fighting game beating each other up like there is no tomorrow with enough flashy ninjutsu techniques to cause a mild seizure.
There will be original anime cutscenes with both new and familiar faces. Some of those faces are even already technically dead, but who cares? Death does not stop a ninja from being awesome.
Want to see an older Naruto beat the crap out of his younger self? Well, who doesn’t? Enjoy the trailer after the break.

Little-known fact: The Lizard isn’t the only reptilian baddie in the Spider-Man universe. And the coming video game adaptation of The Amazing Spider-Man has got the Iguana, a genetically altered experiment of Curt Connors’, as an enemy for you to chase down and defeat when it releases this June. The trailer embedded after the jump features more Spider-Man — and Rhino, for some reason — than Iguana footage, but you get a decent look at the fiend. He looks a bit more animalistic in this portrayal than the comics, which was purely intentional in order to differentiate him from The Lizard. Unlike many other comics characters, Iguana isn’t somebody who’s suffered an unfortunate accident and forced to live as a freak.

Not at all. Instead, Iggy’s a dime-a-dozen iguana held at Oscorp who’s tested on by Connors and other scientists. While some of the tests conducted seemingly have no effect, one final serum the doctor who later transforms into The Lizard administers to Iggy causes the effects of the previous potions to compound and turn him into a seven-foot-tall beast.

Just a rumour this one, but Gamereactor recently conducted an interview with Sega’s brand manager Ben Harbone to discuss their upcoming HD re-release of Jet Set Radio. During the interview Harbone was asked which Sega games were most requested for an HD makeover.

“It’s going to be Shenmue and Skies of Arcadia as well,  those are a couple of our most requested games,” he replied.

“I can’t say yes or no but we may be working on them.”

So definitely not an official confirmation then, but it seems the chances are higher than ever for these games getting the HD treatment.

Meanwhile, Jet Set Radio HD hasn’t been given an official date but Sega are hoping for a summer release on XBLA, PSN and PC.

Seemingly out of nowhere, a Baldur’s Gate teaser site complete with countdown sprung up a few weeks ago. The site has now officially revealed that a Baldur’s Gate Enhanced Edition is being released this summer.

The game is being developed by Overhaul Games which includes developers who worked on the original game, released 14 years ago.

According to the developers, the game won’t be a simple remake. Brand new content is being developed specifically for this version along with a graphical overhaul courtesy of an updated version of the Infinity Engine. It is also set to include the expansion pack Tales of the Sword Coast.

This will be Overhaul Games’ second remake following their updating of the classic MDK 2.

It has also been suggested that the second game in the series, Baldur’s Gate II: Shadows of Amn could be getting a remake as well, though no release date has been announced.

Apparently this news has excited long term fans, desperate to return to Faerun as the official site of the remake crashed soon after the countdown ended. Even now it’s difficult to gain access due to heavy traffic, though you can try by following this link.

Baldur’s Gate Enhanced Edition will be released exclusively through Beamdog sometime this summer.

The newest trailer for one of the craziest upcoming games features the Bosses of Zombie Rock. This is the stuff acid trips are made of.
First up is Zed the Punk Rocker, who screams words I’m not allowed to post on this site at Juliet, only to have them turn into something solid and go flying after her. Next up is Vikkie the king of Viking Metal, who looks like a KISS reject, Josey the Master of Funk, and Mariska, the Queen of Psychedelia who flips the bird in her little introduction. With Sega releasing classic Dreamcast games in HD, many are holding out on the release of the much-loved Shenmue on both PSN and XBLA.

GamerZines reports that, not only is Shemue HD a reality, it’s been finished for a year now. The site claims an anonymous tipster close to Sega confirmed that both the original game and, surprisingly, its Xbox-exclusive sequel are both ready to launch at the publisher’s bidding.

“Shenmue HD is real [and has been] finished for well over a year,” the source said. “As is Shenmue II HD.”

Apparently the release is being withheld while Sega discusses the future of the franchise. Let’s hope that means a Shenmue III announcement finally comes soon, then.

Konami, in response to the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s decision to include Metal Gear Solid and MGS: Sons of Liberty in this summer’s “The Art of Video Games Exhibit,” posted an appreciative note on their webpage in which they (perhaps unnecessarily) reintroduce the game’s plot, celebrate the series’ 25th anniversary — and announces that as of December 2011, the Metal Gear franchise has reached a lofty 31.1 million units sold.
To put this in perspective, the immensely successful Final Fantasy series has sold just over a hundred million units

but the RPG franchise has fourteen numbered installments and almost as many spinoffs and sequels, not to mention a host of re-releases and cross-platform ports. Metal Gear, with six numbered installments, an equal number of handheld counterparts, and a few expanded editions and HD remixes, has roughly a third of the total number of titles for sale — and has sold roughly a third as many units. Though its legacy may not be as storied and expansive as that of Final Fantasy, Metal Gear is most certainly pulling its weight

Max Payne makes a return to his old stomping grounds in a quartet of new screenshots for Max Payne 3 — or, as the state of Max’s hair and hideous paisley tie that only a cop could love might imply, this may be a flashback to before Max moved to Brazil, the game’s new setting.
In any case, the shots look great, showcasing the beleaguered cop and his noirish world in gritty cinematic detail. We get a look at some of the series’ recurring themes as well: guns, bullets, and guns which are firing bullets. Check out the gallery after the break, and save the date for Max Payne 3′s release May 15th.

If you were sitting on the fence about EA’s latest snowboard-action romp SSX, now might be the time to jump up and grind that mofo. Effective now and ending this Tuesday, Gamestop and Origin are selling this bad boy for $39.99. However, if a thirty percent price cut isn’t enough to sway your decision and you didn’t check out Chad’s review earlier, now would be a good time to do so.
Especially nostalgic fans who loved competing with their friends in the original SSX games will want to pay special attention. Chad says “For a certainty this is a great game and a worthy ‘reboot’ of the franchise that has been missing for many years,” though he has some misgivings about the multiplayer modes

most notably, the lack of a split-screen option so you can play with your friends in the same room. This feature has, sadly, fallen into the background of many games these days, but its loss is more keenly felt in reboots like this, where the social element was a focal point of the original entries.

Capcom has finally spilled some details on the truckload of DLC coming to Street Fighter X Tekken. Let’s start first and foremost with the DLC characters, which are easily the biggest additions. The characters will be offered in a single pack and will not be available individually, which isn’t usually how the genre handles this kind of content. For just $20, players will be able to download and use all 12 of the DLC characters. There is no release date for the character pack, but we know it’s due sometime after the release of SFXT for the PS Vita. Next are the alternate costumes, which will be priced at just $1. A whopping 38 costumes are currently confirmed – 19 for the Tekken characters and 19 for the Street Fighter characters.

Two costume collection packs will include all 19 costumes for either faction and will be priced at $13 apiece, saving anyone interested in buying all of the costumes a total of $12 compared to buying them individually. This content will launch on April 3rd, alongside three free color packs containing four colors each for use in the character customization mode.
The free DLC doesn’t stop there. Within “a few weeks” of the first DLC releases, Capcom will be rolling out additional quick combos to equip your characters with. Then, they’ll release six Boost Gem and three Assist Gem packs for a total of 60 new gems. This update will also allow players to save more gem loadouts per character and add a ‘replay analyzer’, allowing players to study the capabilities of each chraracter more closely.
Finally, an update adding ‘tournament support’ will be released. The update will streamline the gem selection process by implementing a new dial system.

BioWare is turning its eye towards what’s next for its Dragon Age franchise, having taken to Twitter and the official forums today to tell fans that the studio will be, according to franchise director Mike Laidlaw, “very actively” looking for feedback from the community, also promising to show the game “more than before as it develops.”

Adds Dragon Age II‘s executive producer Mark Darrah: “You’ve most certainly heard the rumors floating around, and unfortunately I can’t really comment on them.  However, what I can say is that we’ve been thinking a lot about Dragon Age – what it means, and where it could go.”

BioWare has been fending off the fans with a few of its latest releases;

many were not pleased with the direction Dragon Age II took, and by now you’ve surely heard the thunder the ending of Mass Effect 3 has caused.

For those fans, the following words may offer some relief: “This past year, we’ve spent a lot of time both going back to the ‘BioWare vault’ of games and re-examining them, and looking at some new possibilities that today’s industry allows.”

“With that, the next thing for the Dragon Age team members and I to do is hear from you, and not just on the forums, or Facebook, or Twitter.  We’ll be attending a number of conventions and gatherings, including PAX East in April.  The most valuable thing we can get out of those meetings is to hear from you on those same topics – what does Dragon Age mean to you, and where would you like to see it go?  We’re excited to hear what you have to say!”

The project hinted at here is most likely Dragon Age III then. Though yet to be announced, a few rumors have snuck out. Namely, the third entry has been said to strike a balance between the first two games and, perhaps more interestingly, include a Frostbite 2-powered multiplayer mode.
