Subject: Why The Last Of Us Looks Like More Than Just ‘Another Zombie Game’ Sun Dec 11, 2011 8:59 pm
The Last Of Us looks to be a similarly character focused affair. The game’s debut trailer introduces us to Ellie, “a young teenage girl who is wise beyond her years”. The trailer indicates that Ellie has spent her entire life living with the adversity of the “infection” — a strange fungal like disease that has transformed the living into psychopathic hunters. Joining her for the journey is Joel, “a ruthless survivor” who remembers the old days. The duo’s relationship is unknown at this stage, but there appears to be a workman-like camaraderie between them. Our guess is that they are two survivors relying on each other’s strengths in order to stay alive.

Subject: Metal Gear Rising Was Canceled Prior to Platinum's Involvement Mon Dec 12, 2011 8:13 pm
Rising is now set sometime after MGS4, rather than in between MGS2 and 4.
Many fans are excited that Platinum Games, the developer of Bayonetta and MadWorld, is now officially the team behind Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance (the new name for Metal Gear Solid: Rising). Others are not quite so pleased. Whichever side of this issue you may fall on, were it not for Platinum, the game may not have ever made it to store shelves. A video called "The Truth Behind Rising" is set to be released by Konami tomorrow detailing how the collaboration between Kojima Productions and Platinum Games came to be.

In the meantime KP producer Yuji Korekado has shared some details on the latest Kojima podcast, the most noteworthy of which is in regards to a secret cancellation of the game at one point. As translated by Andriasang, Korekado explained that the development staff lost sight of what the game's core would be -- aside from the ability to precisely chop things up. Kojima, who was an executive producer and left the game in the hands of Shigenobu Matsuyama and Mineshi Kimura, expressed doubt that the game could be made despite the story and motion capture both receiving a good amount of attention. Ultimately the decision was made to cancel it, but during a visit to Kojima's studio, Platinum expressed its excitement for the game and ended up being tasked with development.

Rising was first revealed during E3 2009 after a series of teases and countdowns. It was seen again at E3 2010 but things then went largely quiet, and a rumor surfaced later in the year that the game would not be releasing until 2012. Kojima was largely silent about the game for an extended period until its new name and developer were officially announced this past Saturday. Platinum was rumored to be developing the game prior to E3, although this was outright denied in June. That apparently was a lie, though it is true Hideki Kamiya is not involved with Rising. The change from Kojima Productions to Platinum means some of the particulars are different from what we had heard about in years past.
Subject: Re: 69Osom GAMER'S SOULS WITHIN (Sept 21 2011-Apr 26 2012) Mon Dec 12, 2011 8:45 pm
As outlined on Konami's website, the original intention of combining stealth and action has been dropped in favor or something more action-centric. That was clearly evidenced in the trailer that debuted on Saturday, and it's a reality that doesn't bode well for those who planned on playing through the game without killing anyone. Where the game takes place in the overall Metal Gear Solid storyline is also now different; while the 'Solid' part of the name has been dropped, Rising does still star an MGS character and takes place in that universe. Konami says the game is now set "several years" after Metal Gear Solid 4, rather than in between MGS2 and 4. A release date has yet to be announced for Rising. It is, however, still headed to both PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 as previously announced.
Subject: Bethesda looking to ‘make Skyrim better’ via DLC Mon Dec 12, 2011 9:15 pm
We’re all probably not even halfway through consuming the content Skyrimhas to offer, but we can’t help but wonder what comes next for the open-world RPG. In the way of additional content, that is.Joystiq has the same idea, and they bugged game director Todd Howard at the VGAs over the question. While there are no hard details to be had yet, Howard did say the studio is looking to not just add content but also for “ways to make the game better.”“So we’re going through ideas right now, and processing everything people are doing in the game, and trying to think of ways that we can improve it.”There will be multiple DLC releases, Howard says, but Bethesda ”don’t have a timetable.

They won’t be quick, and they’ll have a lot of meat on them.”During the chat, Howard also touched on the chances of Bethesda doing a multiplayer game.“You can never say never to anything like that,” he says, “but it’s not what our focus is. This type of game is where our hearts are, what we get excited about, and that’s what we want to focus on. We don’t want to lose that focus and we never want to sacrifice anything in the singleplayer game just to have it be multiplayer.”Bethesda walked away from the show with three awards: Studio of the Year, RPG of the Year, and the almighty Game of the Year.

How? Like everybody else about to release a highly-awaited game, announcing limited editions.North Americans will have the option to choose among three different packages, which should be of interest if you’re looking forward to getting acquainted with a collective of magical troll fantasia. All three limited editions include a custom parchment map of Amalur, a seven-piece die set and Destiny Cards, which are things you should totally have. And the game, of course.

Signature Edition — (300 units, $275): • All items in the Special Edition (parchment map, seven-piece dice set, full set of destiny cards, and soundtrack). • All items in the Collector’s Edition.• Individually-numbered, custom sketch by Todd McFarlane limited to 300 units. • The Prismere Troll figurine is signed by Todd McFarlane, R.A. Salvatore or Curt Schilling and are limited to 300 editions. Bad news? These limited editions are so limited, they’re not shipping outside the US or Canada. Hence “North Americans” above. I guess the rest of us will have to bust trolls the old-fashioned “standard” way, which is fine… it’s not like we needfancy figurines on our shelves or wantawesome lithographs on our walls, right… ?Expect Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoningin February 2012 on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC.

It’s a spin-off of a spin-off. Codemasters has revealed that its Dirtseries is getting a rally game that focuses less on actual rally, more on arcade-styled driving and a hell of a lot of chaos in confined spaces.Dirt Showdownis more about the spectacle of destructive motoring and pulling off crazy stunts than actual racing, though it’s not necessarily deprived of it. The idea is to take the extreme elements first seen in Dirt 2and mix them up with those of Dirt 3‘s Gymkhana events, with a little bit of Destruction Derby thrown into the pile because… well, why not? There will be both single and multiplayer elements in Showdown, with the inclusion of a split-screen mode so you can play with your friends on and offline.

The game will also incorporate an equivalent to EA’s Autolog feature that’ll be handily designed into the menus so you can always see your times and those of your friends, or enemies if you will.Dirt Showdownwill introduce three basic modes, each of which are built up by three different kind of events: Standard racing, which include Lap Attack, Eliminator and Domination modes; Hoonigan events, made up by Smash Hunters (smash stuff), Trick Rush (stunt driving) and Head 2 Head (take on an opponent, do some tricks and get the highest score); Demolition events, composed by Rampage (destroy everything that moves), Hard Target (escape the onslaught of metal coming at you) and King of the Ring (think a well-rounded arena with cars starting at multiple point As, all heading for a single point B… Destruction Derby-style).
Subject: Re: 69Osom GAMER'S SOULS WITHIN (Sept 21 2011-Apr 26 2012) Mon Dec 12, 2011 9:58 pm
The single change that differentiates Showdownfrom previous iteration in the series, which is one you should keep in mind if you’re drawn to this game, is the fact that it ditches simulative gameplay and replaces it with an arcade-styled one, making the handling a lot more forgiving, thus letting you focus on making tight drifts, insane stunts and embedding your hood into another car’s trunk.Dirt Showdownis currently set for a 2012 launch on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC. With a “mild” addiction to speed but lacking any interest in rally whatsoever, this is finally one pile of Dirt I won’t be shaking off too soon. I’m keeping an eye on you, Codemasters.

Not a fan of the direction of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance? Fear not, for you will get your piece of meat in the form of a new stealth-focused Metal Gear. It just may take a while.Risingwas always intended as a spin-off with no stealth involved, series creator Hideo Kojima’s said, adding: ”For those of you desire for authentic stealth MGS, I want you to patiently wait for the sequel coming in future.”“Patiently” is the key word here; Kojima has in the past said that making a Metal Gear Solid 5is something he’d probably have to do at some point, as for when…“I think we’ll probably have to make it [a sequel to MGS4] at some point,” he told OPM last month, “but what that will be, we have no idea.

The art shows Joel and Ellie hiding behind a shop counter as two rival survivors search a store. It heavily suggests a cover based system like Uncharted might be employed and that beating people with death with a two by four as demoed in the The Last Of Us trailer might not be the only option. Check out the rest for some more locations and a beautiful image of the two laughing around a fire that sells the emotional content of the game better than any trailer.

Subject: The Last Of Us gets a release date. Third person confirmed. “Not a video game” Wed Dec 14, 2011 8:36 pm
In an interview with USA Today Naughty Dog’s fungus zombie adventure has been confirmed for a 2012, early 2013 release date. A few more game details were teased as well including the fact that it will be a third person game with a similar player view to Uncharted, and that the two leads, Joel and Ellie, will meet at the beginning of the story. (See 28 The Last Of Us Screens)Creative director Neil Druckmann says the game’s male lead is a “a vicious survivor. When he meets this girl, she is his one chance at redemption”. Apparently the inspiration was indeed the fungas infected ants shown in the early trailers.

USA Today says “Back in 2008, Druckmann had been mulling an idea for a graphic novel about a father and daughter in a zombie tale. He and game director Bruce Straley were watching the BBC/Discovery series Planet Earth and saw a segment on the cordyceps fungus. At the time, both were working on Uncharted 2: Among Thieves; they had also worked onUncharted: Drake’s Fortune. In close-ups, the documentary showed how the parasitic fungus infected ants and, having taken over their brains, resulted in protruding growths from their heads. A thousand-plus fungus variations exist, each genetically targeting an individual species. “We instantly thought ‘humans,’” Straley says.”

Interestingly Naughty Dog co-president Christophe Balestra disputes that this is even a game, telling the newspaper, ”We want to redefine what our medium is even called. ‘Video game’ is not an accurate name anymore. It is not necessarily a game with rules and a winner and a loser. It’s an experience”. Other co-presidents Evan Wells also explains it was the first time Naughty Dog split its team from a ‘one-project-at-a-time studio’ saying, ”We felt if we didn’t expand the roles for people, we could potentially lose them, because they really wanted to be challenged. We didn’t want to lose that talent.
