The tough-as-nails Ellie is Gearbox’s attempt to include a female character who goes against the usual tropes of video game design. Ellie, daughter of Moxxi and sister to Scooter, introduces the Bandit Technical vehicle. In a written response to PC Gamer, Gearbox staff said her unusual design is very much intended.
“The narrative goal with Ellie was to have a character who hits all of the tick marks of a good Borderlands character (funny, unexpected, looks as if they could probably kill you in thirteen different ways if you got on their bad side), while also making an independent female character who looked the exact
exact opposite of how most females tend to be represented in games,” the developer said.
“We also wanted to make sure that, through her dialog and visual design, we never cast her in a light where the player is encouraged to pity, laugh at, or mock her because she doesn’t look like Jessica Rabbit.”
Gearbox ran through several designs before hitting on Ellie’s current incarnation, including a very short mechanic, a two-headed effort, and a purely muscular version which felt “too abrasive and bandit-y”. Choosing a softer outline helped cement Ellie’s unique “silhouette and style” but also offered unlooked for challenges in animation and stance; hit the link above for more details and some work-in-progress images. “She does straight-up murder a dude in a really gory way less than ten seconds after you meet her,” Gearbox said of the character. Nice.
Borderlands 2 releases on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in September.

Those pre-ordering Need for Speed: Most Wanted will be able to grab one of three DLC packs as a bonus, EA said today. Players that pre-order the game now will all receive the Need for Speed Most Wanted Limited Edition, which includes two early unlocked multiplayer cars – the Maserati GranTurismo MC Stradale and Porsche 911 Carrera S – as well as other bonuses.
Three DLC packs are available from various retailers, meaning you’ll be able to grab the Speed Pack, Strike Pack or Power Pack as a result of an early buy.
Multiplayer bonuses included in the special edition include:

There are so many ridiculously fancy editions of Assassin’s Creed III that I have no idea which one to put on my wish list. Ubisoft’s sent along a video showing off the Freedom Edition, which is the one with the figurine, and it looks pretty schmick.
Assassin’s Creed III arrives on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in late October, alongside Vita tie-in Liberation. A PC version is expected by the end of the year.
The Freedom Edition is one of three retail collector’s packages but for the ultimate fan there’s also the UbiWorkshop Edition, available directly from the publisher itself.
Andriasang‘s generally reliable early Famitsu leaks report that Sega’s major Yakuza announcement is an HD remake bundle of the first two Yakuza games. The re-release is expected in early November – although previous rumours had it down for December – exclusively for PlayStation 3. We’re waiting on the magazine’s release for more information. The first two entries in the action series arrived on PS2; Yakuza 3 and 4 are available on PS3, and a fifth release is due this year.
Wait, what, Persona 4 Arena has a plot? Is “kicking the snot out of each other” not premise enough? Atlus spoils you guys.
Persona 4 Arena arrives in the US on August 7. A European release has been confirmed but not dated; it’s expected to follow pretty shortly, but be patient, as both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions are region-locked. Happily, multiplayer servers are global.
Have you been lying awake at night wondering whether Dragon Ball Z Budokai HD Collection will come to the US as well as Europe? Well, get some rest; Destructoid has Namco Bandai’s US release schedule and it is listed for a northern winter launch on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
Browsing the UK schedule while we’re at it, Thundercats is coming to DS in September, not December as previously reported. Otherwise it seems to be business as usual
Whether you call it Full Frontal Assault or QForce, the wrappings are coming off Insomniac’s latest Ratchet & Clank game, which includes elements of tower defence in addition to classic action.
According to a post on the PS Blog, QForce (the European subtitle) will bring back the classic camera of the PS2 games, emphasising the third-person weapon formula of early entires in the series. The twist comes with “a brand new tower defense element”, unfortunately not yet detailed, which will have players protecting a base as they adventure.
Full Frontal Assault (same game, different title for our American brethren) will feature three playable characters – Ratchet, Clank and Captain Qwark – facing off against a new enemy. There will be five levels across three planets, and both local and online co-operative gameplay.
Insomniac has promised to detail another online mode in the near future. The game arrives on PlayStation 3 during northern autumn.
A lightweight, fluffier stealth action experience is to be had in the disguise-filled antics of Naughty Bear: Picnic in Paradise.
Picnic in Paradise is a follow up top the 2010 original, which was absolutely panned but had some really interesting quirks. Here’s hoping the foibles have been ironed out ahead of the sequel release on the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade later this year.
The brief trailer showcases some of the new costumes and stealth abilities our furry friend has at his disposal in his quest to be a right bastard.
Namco has announced One Piece: Pirate Warriors will launch on PSN September 25 in North America. The Omega Force-developed game will release in Europe on September 21.
Gearbox has gleefully announced that Borderlands 2 is, to all intents and purposes, done. That doesn’t mean the shooter RPG has gone gold yet; as detailed on the Gearboxity blog, the game is soon to be sent off for certification with platform holders.
The Gearbox team isn’t sitting on its hands waiting for release day; it’s about to kick into DLC gear. The first piece is the game’s fifth class, the mechnomancer, which will be offered two to three months after Borderlands 2′s September launch on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
The new class will be free to members of the Premiere Club; membership is as simple as pre-ordering Borderlands 2, and will convey other benefits including a couple of weapons, a key to obtain a rare item, and the Vault Hunter’s Relic, which boosts luck in finding gear.
THQ has released the fourth, and final installment of the Darksiders II “Behind the Mask” series. In it, Vigil discusses skill trees, magic, and “nearly limitless loot, mixed with fast-paced combat.” Darksiders II is out on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 in August, with a Wii U version coming sometime after the console releases.
Although the God of War games are undeniably violent, Sony Santa Monica strives to keep from glorifying the gore, and is very careful about how it approaches tricky situations like violence against women. Asked whether Sony Santa Monica has a threshold of violence it isn’t willing to cross, design manager David Hewitt told IGN that is does.
“The team has a set of rules that define those sorts of things very clearly. Where it shows itself is how the combat designers and animators have designed Kratos’ moves,” he said.

“He’s always leaning forward, he’s always moving forward. He’s seeking revenge and he’s after his ultimate objective and he will tear through enemies – rip them in half – as quickly as he can. But there’s not a lot of flourishes, there’s not any kind of enjoying the moment. There’s nothing about this that he’s enjoying.”
Interestingly, Hewitt said the team treads very carefully in certain particularly loaded examples.
“There are some things we’ve pulled back from. I think where this has been an issue is with violence against women – the team’s pulled back from some of that and assessed that a little more carefully,” he said.

There are certain things that carry has a different kind of resonance that we don’t want to get into. This isn’t about statement-making in that regard. It’s about fleshing out this character.”
Despite that, Hewitt promised that Ascension will continue the franchise’s traditions of “those moments where people kind of recoil a bit – genuinely uncomfortable moments”.
God of War: Ascension is a PlayStation 3 exclusive due in 2013.

Reports are surfacing that Final Fantasy Versus XIII, which has been in development since 2006, has been cancelled.
Kotaku is claiming that the planned PS3 exclusive has been canned quietly by Square Enix after it hasn't been seen in some time. The company has allegedly made the decision to let the game fade away rather than officially announce its cancellation due to concerns over stock prices. There has been much speculation over the past year that the writing was on the wall after the title was conspicuously absent from conventions.
Final Fantasy Versus XIII Link & heads up given by Azurel
In fact, the last time the game was mentioned was back in May when designer Tetsuya Nomura told Game Informer that "We would like to ask for your patience on an official announcement for this title. It always takes time when tackling the challenge of doing something completely new, but we are doing our best to bring information to the fans as quickly as we can. Your patience is greatly appreciated." Kotaku also reports that resources used to make the game were folded into what will become Final Fantasy XV a few months back.
We reached out to Square Enix for comment, but were told the company wouldn't comment on speculation or rumours. Whether true or not, an official cancellation would be better than simply letting the game become "vaporware", where its existence is never referenced again.
Final Fantasy Versus XIII was originally announced in 2006 as part of the Fabula Nova Crystallis series of games. The other games two games in the series announced at the same time, Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy Type-0 have both been released, and Final Fantasy XIII-2 has also been announced and launched since.
As i said developers knows the next gen systems are around the corner & are ready to jump ship. Articles of square crying how 360 & PS3 has been around to long & now this. Square is eager for the next gen so they could at least have a spin & just come out & say it.
