Creative Assembly has been making the Total War games for twelve years, and I am sure they will deliver on their large-scale turn-based/real-time hybrid gameplay.  The question is whether or not the senate portions will be equally intriguing, or at least interesting enough to produce a compelling narrative.  The Creative Assembly has certainly chosen a both historically dramatic and well-documented setting, so we can only hope they exploit it properly.

Tomonobu Itagaki — the former Dead or Alive creator who reimagined the Ninja Gaiden franchise — has retrieved the rights to his current project, Devil’s Third, from THQ after it was dropped from the publisher’s development lineup.

The good news is that THQ is doing right by Itagaki and returning the rights and allowing the Valhalla Game Studios to decide the IP’s fate.  Devil’s Third has had a rocky development, first losing its middleware engine developer, and now losing its publishing deal.

Itagaki is clear that there is no bad blood between him and THQ, and considering the publisher’s recent financial struggles, it should come as no surprise that some games would be negatively affected.

Let’s hope that Itagaki and Valhalla can find a new publisher.

IO Interactive has unveiled their plans to release a enhanced edition of their upcoming title Hitman: Absolution. This special edition will be known as the Deluxe Professional Edition and will feature a number of extra goodies.

The special edition will contain a collectors vinyl figurine of Agent 47, an artwork book, special DLC and a making of DVD.  Jon Brooke, Brand Director IO spoke on the collectors edition: “Our community and fans mean the world to us and we’ve worked hard to create a collectors edition which we think they’ll love.”

Imageepoch CEO Ryoei Mikage has hinted that Tokitowa could eventually release in the west. Taking to twitter to answer a follower’s question, Mikage said “the project is progressing,” and that localization “contracts soon.” Like Andriasang, we’re assuming his comment means the firm is ironing out a contract with a localization firm. It’s also assumed Namco Bandai would handle publishing the game in the west, as it’s also the Japanese publisher.

Industry analysts have said even if Grand Theft Auto V should miraculously release this year, it won’t curb sluggish industry sales.
Speaking with VentureBeat, Robert W. Baird & Co’s Colin Sebastian said while he isn’t confident the game will be out this year, if Take-Two should surprise us all and release it, console software sales would still be in a modest decline.

“Given the current momentum of the market, I doubt any major releases, even one of GTA V’s size, would push the physical markets back into the positives,” said EEDAR analyst Jesse Divnich in agreement.

Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter said while GTA V could accumulate $700 million in sales, it would still only amount to “less than 10% of the expected overall software sales this year,” industry sales are down more than that, year-to-date.
While it’s been suggested GTA V could release during T2′s financial year ending March 31, 2013, the firm has yet to confirm when it plans to release it. Going by past releases in the franchise and from Rockstar in general, it will release “when it’s ready.

ATLUS has released a statement regarding its decision to region-lock Persona 4 Arena being region-locked, promising it’s not the start of a “slippery slope, [or] the beginning of a dangerous and unnecessary precedent.
In the lengthy statement, the firm said it was “completely unprepared for the force with which the community communicated their disapproval,” of the move but tried to reassure fans region-locking is not the beginning of a new ATLUS policy.

“This is an isolated case, a situation precipitated by a number of factors, some of which are simply out of our North American hands.

Moreover, our North American community is often forced to wait months for a localized release (a plight our friends across the Atlantic can relate to).
Again, with P4 Arena, we’re able to release within two weeks of Japan. We pushed hard for these things. We know our fans want them–well really, EXPECT them–and we did our best to get as much for our release as possible.

“The unforeseen consequence in all of this was that we had a version of our biggest game of the year releasing within a couple weeks in two territories, both identical in content, but at radically different price points. Importing, as great as it is for gamers who otherwise can’t get access to a title, can also cannibalize the performance of a title in one territory to the benefit of another.

“While we’re all one big ATLUS family, the reality is that the dramatic difference between the Yen and the Dollar makes for a dramatic difference in price. So the decision was made, perhaps at the expense of some of our fans, clearly at the frustration of many, to region-lock Persona 4 Arena.”

The firm concluded its explanation by stating the choice to region-lock P4 Arena “was a business one, one that has very clearly affected how many perceive the project,” and reaffirmed the online multiplayer will be global, and not affected by the region-lock.

Persona 4 Arena hits Japan on July 26 and the US on August 7. Reports indicate it may arrive in Europe on August 31.

European publisher Zen United intends to get Persona 4 Arena into local hands as soon as possible.
It’s always our intention to keep the delay between US/JP and EU to a minimum and we appreciate people’s patience,” a representative told Siliconera.

“We don’t have an official release date to confirm at this time, but we hope to be able to do so soon.”

The release delay is a more pressing issue than usual because even the PlayStation 3 version of Persona 4 Arena is region-locked, a very unusual move from Atlus which makes importing impractical.

The American arm of the publisher has explained the move as a business decision based on the added cost of a near simultaneous Japanese and western launch with added features, and reiterated that multiplayer is global.

Persona 4 Arena is a fighting spin-off to the popular RPG and is due on both HD consoles in Japan on July 26 and the US on August 7.

ArmA II, the military realistic shooter, has recently become known for telling ‘unrealistic’ stories about the rising of the undead. DayZ, a mod created by Dean Hall, one of the game’s developers, has become a worldwide hit. With it recently clocking in with over 400,000 players it’s now time for the team behind it all to think about the future, and more importantly, how to ‘survive’.

“There’s still a large number of players out there with a PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360 who are looking forward to the game,” Harada told Eurogamer.

“So we feel it’s probably more relevant to get the title out to them on the current hardware.”

That’s not to say platforms are totally locked down.
We’re not completely sure, but that’s the direction at this moment,” Harada added.

Tekken x Street Fighter is not yet in full production although companion Street Fighter x Tekken released earlier this year. Next-generation hardware is expected to make its debut next year.

Just how long can you sit quietly in your chair watching the cast of Resident Evil 6 get on with it? Over four hours, apparently.
Capcom sent 4 hours 15 minutes of cutscene footage to the BBFC in its ratings application, which resulted in an 18 sticker.

To save you the maths, that means Resident Evil 6 has at least 255 minutes of cutscene, as opposed to Resident Evil 5′s 65 minutes and Resident Evil 4′s 127 minutes.

The additional cinematics are somewhat unsurprising given suggestions that Resident Evil 6′s storyline will be at least twice as long as Resident Evil 5′s.

Resident Evil 6 arrives on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in October, and will allow players to experience the plot through three scenarios.

Netherrealm boss Ed Boon presented the game to audiences at EVO; if you missed the live stream, check out a replay below, with thanks to IGN. As well as a good look at Superman and the Flash, you can see how Netherrealm have strung together multiple arenas, how arenas can be expanded, and a metre wager system.

Injustice: Gods Among Us is expected in 2013 on PlayStation 3, Wii U and Xbox 360, and is the first non-Mortal Kombat game from Netherrealm.

The director of worldwide technology at Square Enix believes that Sony and Microsoft’s decision to let the current generation of consoles approach its eighth year has been a costly mistake.
Speaking with  GI International, Julien Merceron feels the current generation of consoles has outstayed its welcome, and pushing for an extended life-cycle of current hardware is the biggest mistake Microsoft and Sony have ever made.

“Now you don’t need to manage longevity by complexity of programming, because your longevity is ensured by your online model. And I would suggest that maybe we don’t want long generations.

We have Sony and Microsoft talking about this generation lasting 7,8,9 or even 10 years and it’s the biggest mistake they’ve ever made,” he said while discussing hardware complexity and opportunities for longevity.
He went on to say that those developers that might otherwise have jumped aboard the next generation of hardware have instead investigated other possibilities in the absence of new consoles.

“This generation has been way too long, and I say this because you have a lot of developers that work on a new platform, and perhaps will not succeed, so they will wait for the next generation, and will jump on that platform. You could not do that with this generation though. So these developers went elsewhere to see if the grass was greener. They found web browsers, they found iOS, they found other things and a lot of them won’t come back to the hardware platforms.

Merceron’s comments came as industry analyst Wedbush Morgan predicted a 34% year-on-year sales decline in the industry’s performance for June.

Analyst Michael Pachter pointed to the lack of innovation and over-reliance on sequels as key factors contributing to the industry’s struggles.
“In this unprecedented eighth year of the console cycle, we believe there are few new intellectual properties to reinvigorate interest in the games sector/ Consumers have been offered a never-ending series of sequels, and have been offered fewer choices each year for the last several years, with the result being waning interest in new software purchases and an unprecedented three years of software sales declines,” Pachter said.
